Story Seed Vault is an online publication focused on micro-fiction, stories that are a maximum of 140 characters (in adherence to the limitations of Twitter publishing). We accept science fiction, speculative fiction, and fantasy fiction. However, we are most interested in fiction that is inspired by science in the real world – whether it’s a research article, hard science discovery, soft science theory, or anything you associate with science in your daily life.
We are looking for stories that make us think of the future, that change the way we see ourselves and the world around us. If you’re stuck on what to write, take a look at our submission archives for inspiration and an indication of what we’ve accepted in the past. We also suggest taking a look at science news websites, such as the below:
Ars Technica Technology news, provides breakdowns on the latest scientific advancements. Main focus is IT and ‘gadgets’.
Science Daily Scientific research news. Does not report on general science news.
Science Mag Reports on research and general science news. Almost always evidence-based reporting.
Science Alert and Live Science Pop science news. An easily accessible form of science news that doesn’t use academic language. Prone to clickbait titles.
Disclaimer: Story Seed Vault is not partnered with nor sponsored by any of the sites listed above and our authors should research as widely as they can. Have a favourite news site? Let us know! Shoot us an email or @ us on Twitter.
Submit: Submissions are open for two weeks every month. We will take three stories per submitter. We don’t care if it’s been published before – just provide us with a link to the story. Your personal Twitter account counts as published!
Submissions for July are now closed. Submissions open 12PM August 9th 2017 and close 12PM August 23rd 2017.
Email us at email@example.com – include ‘Story Seed Vault Submission’ in your email subject, and please include the bio you would like us to use. We don’t need titles, as we won’t be including them during publication. What we do need is information about what you based your story on! Please provide a link to the research or a copy of the article you were inspired by. We might require additional evidence of a claim to publish.
Payment: Story Seed Vault is a labour of love by Alex Massey. Despite limited resources, we still believe in paying our writers! We pay $2.00AUD per story (we’ll get in touch about the best payment method). We also include a short bio with your story, and we’ll gladly link to your personal site and/or Twitter account (just fit it in the bio). If you plan to submit more stories in the future, we can hold payments until the amount is larger. Additionally, you can donate your commission to Story Seed Vault (we appreciate it!) to help us pay for future stories. If so, we’ll be sure to send you a complimentary copy of any e-book or zine if it spontaneously creates itself.
Rights: You own your story and can do with it whatever you wish after publication. We do retain the right to keep the story in our archive and to include it in future anthologies, electronic and/or print. By submitting, you agree to give Story Seed Vault these rights if published. Story Seed Vault takes no responsibility for other parties taking inspiration from these concepts or ideas.
Response Times: We do our very best to respond within 7-14 days. If you don’t hear back, shoot us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
